EndPoint Protection for Windows 7

Step-by-Step

Dartmouth is moving from using Symantec EndPoint Protection for Windows 7 computers to a tool provided with the Windows operating system - Microsoft Security Essentials. This provides anti-virus and malware protection for your computer.

Important: Prior to installing Microsoft Security Essentials you MUST remove any other anti-virus software that was previously installed on your computer. Failure to do this has caused computers to not start up properly.

Follow the steps below to install Microsoft Security Essentials on a computer running Windows 7:

  1. Download Microsoft Security Essentials.
  2. Remove any other anti-virus applications that may already be running on your computer. Do this by clicking Start, then Control Panel, then Programs and Features. Click any application you want to uninstall, then click Uninstall.
  3. Restart your computer once all other anti-virus applications are removed. If you have any issue uninstalling other anti-virus software, contact your department's IT support office before proceeding. Failure to remove this application could result in your computer not working.
  4. Open your Downloads Folder or the location where you downloaded the Microsoft Security Essentials installer.
  5. Double click the file you downloaded (mseinstall.exe). Answer the questions when prompted, accepting the defaults.

Note: Once you install Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows Defender is disabled by default. This is due to Microsoft Security Essentials being both an antivirus and anti-spyware utility, so Windows Defender is not needed and may conflict with Security Essentials if it was running.
