Canvas Service Overview

Description

Canvas is a web-based tool for teaching, learning, and collaboration. All Dartmouth classes are automatically provisioned with a Canvas site. Canvas integrates with many other teaching and learning tools used at Dartmouth. New features, enhancements and bug fixes are applied to Canvas every three weeks.

Canvas is developed and hosted by Instructure.

Quick Access

All Canvas users log into Canvas with their Dartmouth NetID and password.

Approved guest users need to obtain a Dartmouth NetID and password in order to access Canvas.

Available to

Dartmouth faculty, students, and staff.

Faculty can request a Dartmouth guest account for external users who need to access Canvas please refer to http://tech.dartmouth.edu/its/services-support/help-yourself/knowledge-base/canvas-guest-accounts.

Benefits and Features

Canvas is a management system with a focus on extensibility. Third party learning tools, such as blogs, wikis, Piazza discussion boards and a host of other tools can easily be connected to individual course sites by the faculty who administers a given course. Canvas’ notification and messaging tools are integrated with Facebook, Twitter and a number of other web services; control over where to receive messages resides with each individual user.

Canvas is a particularly strong tool for student learning when all of their classes use Canvas and it becomes a one-stop-shop for their academic work, collaborations, and communications.

The core tools provided by Canvas include:

  • Course calendar and scheduling tool
  • Announcements, messaging, email
  • Customizable notifications
  • Rich Content Editor to create webpages, link files, embed media, insert images, etc.
  • Assignment tool (collect student submission, provide feedback on-line)
  • Quizzes and surveys
  • Gradebook, rubrics, and alignment with learning outcomes.
  • Course-based analytics
  • Online video conferencing
  • Integrated audio and video tools, including YouTube embedding.
  • File sharing
  • Groups, group assignments
  • Peer review
  • Discussion Board
  • Class photo roster
  • Library reserves and guides

Some of the add-on applications and integrations include:

  • Piazza question and answer platform.
  • Wikis, blogs, journals via Campus Pack.
  • Echo360 lecture capture and in-class polling tools.
  • Kaltura video delivery and embedding platform.

Requirements

Canvas runs on:

  • Windows 7 and newer
  • Mac OS X 10.6 and newer
  • Linux
  • ChromeOS
  • iOS7 and newer
  • Android 4.2 and newer

Canvas supports the last two versions of every browser release. Using the most up-to-date browser and flash versions is highly recommended.

As of April 4, 2016, Canvas supports the following screen readers:

  • Macintosh
    • VoiceOver (latest version for Safari).
  • Windows
    • JAWS (latest version for Internet Explorer)
    • NVDA (latest version for Firefox)
  • There is no screen reader support for Canvas in Chrome.

As of June 25, 2016, Canvas supports the following desktop browsers and Flash versions:

  • Internet Explorer 11 and Edge
  • Chrome 50 and 51
  • Safari 8 and 9
  • Firefox 46 and 47
  • Flash 20 and 21 (for recording or viewing audio/video and uploading files).

All Dartmouth courses have a Canvas site available to use, and are available to faculty about six weeks prior to the start of the term. To learn more about how to use Canvas effectively, we encourage faculty to contact an instructional designer by emailing [email protected].
