Hands-on Introduction to Database Design and Implementation + BYO data/problem

Workshops providing an introduction to
database design and query. Using a relational database can help you store and
analyze your research data and results more efficiently.

Tuesday, September 26, 2017
2:00pm-5:00pm
37 Dewey Field Rd, Instructional Center (1st floor)
Intended Audience(s): Alumni, Faculty, Public, Staff, Students-Graduate, Students-Undergraduate
Categories: Workshops & Training
Registration required.

In the first workshop, we will be using the relational database paradigm, the
Unified Modeling Language (UML), the Entity-Relationship (ER) model, and
implement a simple MySQL database. In the second workshop, we will be using SQL
on a pre-populated database to extract, filter and answer simple analytics
questions. If time permits, we will explore ways of programmatically accessing
databases from tools such as R or Python in order to automate the analytical
process.
In order to actively participate, please bring your own laptop (Mac/Win) and
install the following software:
- MAMP : https://www.mamp.info/en/downloads/
- MySQL Workbench: https://dev.mysql.com/downloads/workbench/
Please do not hesitate to come 15 minutes early if you need trouble shooting
with the software installation.
Please note that this Introduction to Database Design will be followed by an
Introduction to Database Query and Analytics.
Course Length: 2 hours + instructor will be available after the course to
answer your specific questions and requests
