Dartmouth Accounts Service Overview

Your Dartmouth account is a unique 7 character sequence of letters and numbers used to identify you to Dartmouth systems and services. It is commonly referred to as your NetID (Network Identifier).

When a new account is created, it must be “claimed” before it can be used. The claiming process involves setting a password for the account, then choosing security questions and answers for the account. You will be prompted to answer these security questions at different times, one word answers are the best option.

Accounts in the Dartmouth directory are automatically provided to faculty and staff when they are entered into the payroll system and to students when they are entered into the registrar’s system. Students are automatically transitioned to alumni accounts when they graduate, or when their class graduates if they leave Dartmouth early. Each individual may have only one account, even if they have more than one type of affiliation.

Departments are entitled to one non-expiring account based on the classification maintained by Human Resources.

Sponsored accounts can be requested for individuals who are not faculty, staff or students of Dartmouth but who are helping to fulfill the mission of the College.

Canvas Guest accounts can be requested for non-matriculated students auditing courses and guest lecturers.

Benefits and Features

Your Dartmouth account is created when you first become affiliated with Dartmouth. This unique identifier will not change, even if your relationship with Dartmouth changes.

An account in the Dartmouth directory is needed to provide access to most Dartmouth systems, including:

  • Dartmouth network
  • Email and Calendar
  • Collaboration tools
  • Many administrative systems

An account is required before a Dartmouth ID card can be obtained. Not all account types are eligible for a Dartmouth ID card.

You must be an active faculty, student, staff, alumni or guest of Dartmouth.
