Microsoft Office 365 Now Free

Office 365 provides Dartmouth students, faculty and staff:

  • the ability to install Microsoft Office for free on their personal or Dartmouth-owned computers and mobile devices (Office 365 ProPlus),
  • online document editing and storage with Office 365 WebApps,
  • 1 TB of personal storage space with OneDrive.

This software and access to the personal storage space will remain fully functional for as long as your Dartmouth student, faculty or staff account remains active. When your account expires, you will retain read-only access to your Microsoft Office files stored on your computers and mobile devices, and to a 15 Gigabyte 'Mini" OneDrive to store files. Any files that exceed this free, personal 15 Gigabyte allocation will no longer be available once your account expires. This service and software is provided as long as Dartmouth maintains its current agreement with Microsoft. Should the terms of the agreement change in the future, ITS will publicize any changes broadly and further information will be found at this web location.

Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus

The agreement allows Dartmouth to provide a full version of Office, including:

  • Word
  • PowerPoint
  • Excel
  • Outlook
  • Lync
  • OneNote - Windows only
  • Publisher - Windows only
  • Access - Windows only

Each user can install this software on up to five computers, either Windows and Macintosh, and on up to five mobile devices such as iPhones, iPads, Androids and Windows phones.

The software has the same features and functions as other versions of Office and can be used offline; however, you must connect any device on which this is installed to the Internet once every 30 days to verify you are still eligible for the program.

Office 365 WebApps

Office 365 WebApps are touch-friendly web applications that let you create, edit and share your Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote files from any browser. You don't need to install Office on your computer to use these web-based applications which means you can use them from any computer - even one that isn't your own.

Office 365 Web Apps includes:

  • Access to Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote from your web browser;
  • OneDrive – Online document storage with up to 1TB of storage;
  • Open, edit and share your Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote files from your web browser.

OneDrive provides 1 TB of password-protected, online storage for each user. This service is only available for faculty, staff and student accounts. Other accounts such as departmental or organizational accounts are not licensed for OneDrive.

If you elect to synchronize your desktop/laptop computer with your OneDrive storage, you need to take care to not save more data in your OneDrive storage than can fit on your computer's hard drive.
