Department Spotlight: Research Computing

Computing Services' Research Computing division helps Dartmouth scholars and researchers use computing to reach their academic goals by providing software, hardware, consulting, and training.

Research Computing provides

  • Data support: Provide data management services including data storage, sharing, and access via web interfaces and support for off-site collaborators
  • Software Support: Provide technical support for software applications and install software as requested
  • Computational Resources: Provide systems support for computational servers, clusters, and virtual machines
  • Training: Conduct training sessions on research software and systems
  • Statistical Consulting: Offer experimental design, data collection, data analysis and interpretation of results, graphics, and validation of results
  • Code Development: Develop, debug, and optimize codes to effectively use resources and improve code performance
  • Parallel programming: Collaborate with users to convert sequential programs to run in parallel
  • Visualization: Assist academics in creating data graphics or animations to illustrate their scholarship/research
  • Grant Support: Facilitate grant proposal writing by providing configuration and pricing for a grant’s proposed hardware and software.

Research Computing helps faculty, post-docs, graduate, and undergraduate students.

Examples of recent projects

  • Physics faculty member: Developed a web interface to a complex stellar evolution code that’s used by physics classes and researchers at Dartmouth and other institutions.
  • Geisel School of Medicine research group: Provided an RStor data space where the group and external collaborators access and share data.
  • Biology faculty member: Set up a Windows virtual machine and configured a web and Drupal environment that made his journal available to all.
  • Classes and researchers using matlab, stata, and other applications: Provide workshops on how to use these applications.
  • Film Studies department: Developed a web-based interface to its database of films.
  • Researchers with computational codes that require multiple processors: Provide hardware resources and support.
