OneDrive: Cloud Storage for Your Files

Within the Microsoft suite of tools that Dartmouth licenses for all faculty, staff and students, a tool called OneDrive provides a place in the cloud where you can store, share, and sync your files from any device – computer, smartphone, or tablet. You can even work on Office documents with others at the same time.

What’s the difference between OneDrive and MyFiles?

OneDrive is the replacement for MyFiles. However, unlike MyFiles, the files you store in your OneDrive space can be shared with others on those occasions where you want their input on a document. And, you can easily sync the files you stored in your OneDrive space to your local computer, so you can work on them when you’re offline. They’ll automatically sync up with the copy that’s in the cloud once your computer/phone connects to the internet. 

What’s the difference between OneDrive and an Office 365 Group?

OneDrive is for storing of your work files.  An Office 365 group provides other features, in addition to file storage, designed to enhance team collaboration, such as the ability to communicate via a group mailing list.

What’s the difference between OneDrive and a SharePoint site?

OneDrive is for storing of your work files.  A SharePoint site provides other features, in addition to file storage, designed to enhance team collaboration. SharePoint sites are recommended for departmental file storage.

How much data can I store on OneDrive?

Up to 5 TB.
