Create shortcut to launch a FileMaker Server database

Step-by-Step

Follow the steps below to create a shortcut for opening FileMaker Server databases without opening FileMaker first and selecting the database from a list.

Windows

  1. Right click on your desktop then click New then Shortcut from the menu that appears.
  2. In the location of the item, if you are running a version of FileMaker previous to FileMaker 12, type "fmp7://<Server Address>.dartmouth.edu/<Database Name>" and click Next. If you are running FileMaker 12 replace the "fmp7" with just "fmp".
  3. Type a name for the shortcut and click Finish. A shortcut will be created on the desktop. Double click the shortcut to open the FileMaker database.

Macintosh

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Enter the hosted database path in the address bar. If you are running a version of FileMaker previous to FileMaker 12, the format is “fmp7://<Server Address>.dartmouth.edu/<Database Name>". If you are running FileMaker 12 replace the "fmp7" with just "fmp". If the Database Name has spaces in it, replace the spaces with +. For example, a database name of “My Database”, would be entered as “My+Database”.
  3. Do not press Return.
  4. Drag the blue world internet icon onto the desktop. When you double-click on the file you just created, it will open up your FileMaker database.
