Search for Files and Content in Sharepoint

Step-by-Step

Search using Site Search Box

  1. Type the text you are looking for into the Search Box found in the upper-right corner of your SharePoint Site.
  2. Press Enter.

Search using Library Search Box

  1. If you are not already there, move to the top level of the "Document Library" for the site you are searching.
  2. In the search window that appears between the "New, Upload" Sync ..." menu bar, and the list of files in the library, type the text you are looking for.
  3. Press Enter.

Wildcard Search

Another search feature you can use with both searches listed above is a wild card search. Use this when you don’t know the exact keywords, but only a portion of the text you are looking for (i.e. first few letters). The wildcard character in SharePoint is “*“ (asterisk). Enter the asterisk in place of letters you are not typing. For example, if you are looking for "leaving Dartmouth" but it might also be "leaves Dartmouth" or "As you leave Dartmouth", you might enter "leav*" as your search. This will show you all documents that have words starting with "leav".
